CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES
Preface
This report presents the curriculum of CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES (CLAS) Department at the AI-Gad International College for Medical Sciences .
It represents the sum of ideas from many relevant sources and the collaborative efforts of the curriculum- development team, who was given the assignment of producing a novel curriculum that will:
- accomplish the mission and goals of the AI-Gad International College for Medical Sciences
- conserve consistency with employment needs nationally and internationally by providing the core knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLAS) .
Meanwhile remain comfort with international standards and accreditation guidelines.
To achieve these objectives, the team:
a. Has reviewed local programs in the Kingdom of both governmental and private sectors colleges offering CLAS degrees .
b. Has carefully consulted and reviewed the CLAS programs at many of the top universities in the USA as bench marks ;
c. Has maintained harmony with.the practices of the Saudi Council for Health Specialties;
d. Has carried out a detailed analysis on the relevant programs taking in consideration our experiences in the field and the SWAT of our students.
e. Has constructed benchmarks by which to evaluate over several international universities as well as the. guide line of National Accrediting agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
Taking the above mentioned criteria in consideration the team has reached the suggested CLAS curriculum which emphasizes:
1. the importance of quality professional education ;
2. an understanding of the global market-place ;
3. the ability to analyze and resolve ethical dilemmas and legal concerns ;
4. the ability to recognize and understand the issues of cultural diversity ;
5. the development of computer competencies and ;
6. the necessity of effective oral and written communication .
Introduction
The Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLAS) is simply defined as the merge of chemistry, biology, medicine, and problem solving, to form what is universally known as a Clinical Laboratory Sciences degree TECHNOLOGISTS/SPECIALISTS). Clinical Laboratory Science degree as the name indicated is a single specmty term and there are NO sub-specialties degrees.
Application of modern scientific techniques and methods in the expeditious diagnosis and treatment of diseases and illness is one of the prime reasons for the extraordinary progress in medicine in last few decades .
THE Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at AI-Gad International College for Medical Sciences is committed to providing this invaluable service via the CLAS curriculum program. Thus the lives and health of patients often depend on specialized tests performed by Clinical laboratory scientists (medical technologists/specialists). Using microscopes, specialized staining techniques, chemical analyses and highly sophisticated precision instruments, Clinical laboratory scientists perform tests on the fluids, cells, and tissues of the human body. These tests provide data for 50% to 80% of important medical decisions including interpreting the patient's symptoms, monitoring treatment, researching the causes of diseases, and developing new methods for treatment and diagnosis. In addition to performing the many types of crucial laboratory tests, Clinical laboratory scientists analyze results, manage information and communicate with other members of the health care team
Program Mission
The mission of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Department is dedicated to preparing Clinical laboratory science leaders by providing innovative undergraduate curriculum program which is responsive to the national needs of the profession and delivered using modern instructional practices. The Program is committed to the generation and dissemination of scholarly information thereby enhancing the education, practice, and standing of clinical laboratory science professionals thus. promoting their important contribution to the health care delivery system. The theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired by the students in the systemic study of a wide range of different disciplines of specialty, allow them to:
A- conduct up to date laboratory tests,
B- interpret generated laboratory data and understand their relationship for the diagnosis of diseases. In addition to high academic standards,
C- emphasis is placed on high principles of character, a sense of civic & ethic and moral responsibility, and a commitment to basic values of human life. As a result, the Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics Program will be the pre-eminent professional resource in diagnostic laboratory science .
Program Goals
Medical Technology (Clinical Laboratory Science, CLAS) is a health profession with its solid foundation in the supporting basic science of chemistry, biology, statistics, management, and physics Clinical Laboratory Science is a challenging career as well as a satisfying and demanding profession for persons with an interest in the application of the basic sciences and major Specific COURSES to the clinical diagnosis of disease. Clinical laboratory scientists contribute to the development and application of new technologies for the improved diagnosis of pathologic conditions and diseases. Specific courses, focus on all of the major clinicill disciplines including hematology, immunology, immunohematology, hemostasis, histopathology & cytopathology, clinical microbiology, clinical chemistry and body fluids. Each course is designed to prepare students for their roles as (Highly qualified Technologists/Specialists) laboratorians.
In addition, students are introduced to the emerging discipline of molecular pathology and the role that it is beginning to play in the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of disease .
The specific goals of Clinical Lab Sciences Program are to:
ý Provide the students with the essential academic background, learning experiences & appropriate training to enable them to accomplish the recognized standards of a competent self directed Technologist .
ý Apply and provide safe ,competent , & therapeutic care to the community using appropriate technology .
ý Exercise independent work , critical thinking , and problem solving skills .
ý Develop and instill professional attitudes and sound working practices .
ý Communicate & Collaborate with individuals, patients, families through the teaching learning process to augment and promote optimal health .
ý Develop and make use of resources and responsible funding/revenue utilization .
ý Apply management principles in promoting / directing care & in own medical sciences practice .
ý Exercise responsibility for the promotion of change in health care in response to social, cultural, political and economic factories .
Program Objectives :
1. To enroll qualified students in the program who posses motivation and potential for a career in CLS technology.
2. Central to the development and maintenance of CLINICAL LABORATORIES in the kingdom up to the international standards is the availability of qualified, competent, and well-trained Saudi national laboratory SPECIALIST (Technologist) .
3. To provide the students CLS courses as well as the basic sciences supporting ones which enable them gain scientific knowledge and acquire technical skills in the medical field and also to accommodate the huge NATIONAL needs of technical staff in this field in comparison to other disciplines .
4. To develop awareness among Cls Students that expertise of the CLS professionals needs to be always up dated due the tremendous changes in CLS techniques and methods almost every day .
PROGRAM OUT COME
Upon the completion of the program, each student should be able to:
· Apply safety principles in collection, or handling patient specimen, infectious organisms, toxic reagents, and general laboratory equipments, and when otherwise utilize proper sterile and aseptic techniques in their handling .
· Utilize and recognize technique and procedures used for specimen collection, transportation, storage, and suitability evaluations.
· To prepare reagents & necessary sets according to protocols.
